The mylar blankets are actually thin aluminum sheets you can buy at any sporting goods store (like "Dick's") in the camping section. They are emergency blankets used for people stranded in the cold; they reflect back body heat. There are thicker versions that are regular blankets. I have a mylar sheet beneath straw in my cat's cedar house.
I have used several Mylar blankets and have one in my bag now, for emergencies. Heat is lost through convection, radiation, conduction, respiration and perspiration. Mylar blankets can help prevent loss from convection (cold air blowing on you) and radiation. They can also be good vapor barriers if placed below you like a ground cloth.
Dec 29, 2018. #8. I always carried one but had never used it. Decided to try it in a non emergency for testing. Was cold and snowy, sleeping in a tent with mylar blanket over my sleeping bag. Kept me very warm but got so much condensation overnight that it soaked my bag, and was quite unpleasant in the morning.
As an aside, ANYTHING mylar, labeled as a "blanket, in my opinion, shouldnt be used as you would a blanket. Mylar is great for reflecting heat, but it also gets condensation due to ambient moisture, due to the temp variations. So, wrapping up in one, may initially make you warm-within a couple hours, you will soak through.
Feb 10, 2011. #1. Who wins? The trash bag is a lot stronger than the s.blanket and because of it's design (its a container) it can be used for a lot of things that maybe a s.blanket can not. Other than signaling I think trash bags win.
Mylar has zero insulating qualities. It is terrible at preventing radiation and conduction heat loss (I think their claim of radiating back 90% of your body heat is nonsense). Mylar works better for convection heat loss. It is good at radiating heat back from a fire. I did an experiment with a mylar bivy many years ago and was underwhelmed with ...
I have been looking into self warming pet beds. However, I would need larger ones...so I've looked at medium-large sized doggie ones. They priced about $30/each. And I need at least 4, perhaps 6. So, I'm looking for some advice regarding them. The benefits as I can see them: 1) no cords/electricity. 2) provides constant heat.
You can find the Emergency Survival Mylar Blankets at Walmart in the Camping/Sports/Outdoor Department made by Ozark Trail. They measure 52"x82.5". Think I paid around $2.50 for the package. I cut them up into whatever size I need. Right now I have a polar fleece square with the mylar blanket stitched inside.
The Mylar reflects the cat's body heat back onto him and can make the difference in extreme temperatures, particularly in the more northern states and Canada. Caretakers have reported the Mylar blankets are also effective when laid on the floor of the shelter.
