Under the new constitution, Kenya is now divided into 47 counties for administrative purposes. They are grouped below according to the former province they were separated from, with their areas and populations as of the 2009 [6] and the 2019 census: [7]
At the 1999 census there were 2,427 locations and 6,612 sublocations in Kenya. [2] Their functions reduced following the 2010 constitution, but still exist under the national government structure. Each division in Kenya was divided into some locations. Locations often, but not necessarily, coincide with electoral wards.
Following a High Court ruling in September 2009, there were 46 legal districts in Kenya, [7] excluding Nairobi which constituted a 47th district. Following the Kenyan general election, 2013, these districts and Nairobi now constitute the 47 counties which will be the basis for rolling out devolution as set out in the 2010 Constitution of Kenya (district headquarters are in parentheses):
The counties are divided into sub-counties and a further 290 constituencies, then 1450 Wards (to coincide with the County Assembly Wards of the County Government), and Villages. [1] The City of Nairobi, which enjoyed the status of a full administrative province, would become a County.
The Geography of Kenya is diverse, varying amongst its 47 counties. Kenya has a coastline on the Indian Ocean, which contains swamps of East African mangroves. Inland are broad plains and numerous hills. Kenya borders South Sudan to the northwest, Uganda to the west, Somalia to the east, Tanzania to the south, and Ethiopia to the north.
Before the new constitution of Kenya that came into force on 27 August 2010, Kenya was divided into eight provinces (see map). The provinces, excluding Nairobi Province, were subdivided into 46 districts as at 1992, which were further subdivided into 262 divisions.
Past census data (1969, 1979, 1989, 1999, 2009 and 2019) is included for comparison. The counties of Kenya were created by the 2010 Constitution of Kenya and their size and boundaries are based on 1992 districts.
