Associated Wholesale Grocers, Inc. (AWG) is a retailer-owned wholesale grocery cooperative that supplies independently owned supermarkets and grocery stores. Founded in 1928 by Ira E. Weaver (whose family still controls the company), the company develops, grows, processes, packages, and ships a variety of popcorn products for sale around the world. Its customers include store chains around the world, as well as concessionaires, and international popcorn distributors.
William E. Brock settled down in Chattanooga, Tennessee, in 1906 and bought a small wholesale grocery shop, which sold candy produced on the premises by the Trigg Candy company. This candy operation consisted of handmade penny and bulk candies, peanut brittle, peppermints and fudge. The name was changed to Brock Candy in 1909.
The recipes for several of its popcorn flavors are trade secrets [2] that are based on family recipes. A tin of Garrett Popcorn was named as one of Oprah's Favorite Things in 2002. Garrett Brands, the owner of Garrett Popcorn Shops acquired the rights to Frango from Macy's, Inc in 2017.
The current owner, David Ferguson, acquired Joe Brown's in 2019. Over the years, the shops have made a variety of treats, including candy and caramel apples, fudge, peppermint bark, and multiple varieties of popcorn. Joe Brown's caramel corn recipe, mostly unchanged since inception, has received a positive public reception.
