Cayuga Lake (/ k ə ˈ juː ɡ ə /, / k eɪ ˈ juː ɡ ə / or / k aɪ ˈ juː ɡ ə /) is the longest of central New York's glacial Finger Lakes, and is the second largest in surface area (marginally smaller than Seneca Lake) and second largest in volume. It is just under 39 miles (63 km) long.
On August 25, 2020, a Holland Oil and Gas fuel tanker crashed on Route 8 near Akron and Cuyahoga Falls, killing one individual and causing a fire that leaked fuel into the southern section of the river. Frontenac Island, ceremonially important to the Cayuga, is located near the village in Cayuga Lake. This is the only naturally occurring island in the Finger Lakes. In 1859, nearly one third of the island was removed for use as an embankment for the nearby New York Central Railroad along the east shore of the lake without regard for artifacts.
