By returning a null object (i.e., an empty list) instead, there is no need to verify that the return value is in fact a list. The calling function may simply iterate the list as normal, effectively doing nothing. It is, however, still possible to check whether the return value is a null object (an empty list) and react differently if desired.
Gives the resultant <count> of characters creating a substring of characters from the start of the trimmed string (i.e. the substring returned will have length <count>, exclusive of leading whitespace characters, which are trimmed first before <count> is invoked). If <count> is invalid, empty or zero, an empty string is returned.
The typeof operator returns the string "boolean" for these primitive types. When used in a logical context, 0, -0, null, NaN, undefined, and the empty string ("") evaluate as false due to automatic type conversion. All other values (the complement of the previous list) evaluate as true, including the strings "0", "false" and any object.
The simplest operation is taking a substring, a snippet of the string taken at a certain offset (called an "index") from the start or end. There are a number of legacy templates offering this but for new code use {{#invoke:String|sub|string|startIndex|endIndex}}. The indices are one-based (meaning the first is number one), inclusive (meaning ...
