Dirt track racing is the single most common form of auto racing in the United States. According to the National Speedway Directory, there are over 700 dirt oval tracks in operation in the US. [1] The composition of the dirt on tracks has an effect on the amount of grip available. Many tracks use clay with a specific mixture of dirt.
Chuck Akulis' first time on a racetrack was a 1960 "greenhorn" event at Penn Can Speedway in Susquehanna PA. Competing with other beginners in a car borrowed from his brother-in-law, Akulis ended his race with a wreck. He went on to be a regular winner at Penn Can, competing at the speedway until 2000, and winning 9 track championships [4] [5] [6]
