In July 2023, Ajit Pawar rebelled against Sharad Pawar and joined ruling BJP-Shiv Sena government and took oath as Deputy Chief minister of Maharashtra. The majority of NCP's sitting MLAs deserted the party in support of Ajit Pawar. He claimed to the election commission that he was the president of the NCP.

On 6 February 2024, the Election Commission of India (ECI) awarded the party name and symbol to the faction headed by Ajit Pawar. The faction led by Sharad Pawar was subsequently recognized as Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar). [3]
This resulted in two major faction emerging, one led by the founder president Sharad Pawar and the other led by Ajit Pawar. [7] [6] After a legal battle, the Supreme Court of India gave judgement in favour of the faction led by Ajit Pawar, and was allocated the party symbol and name. Subsequently, the Sharad Pawar led faction formed the NCP (SP).
