The Doni Tondo or Doni Madonna is the only finished panel painting by the mature Michelangelo to survive. [1] [nb 1] Now in the Uffizi in Florence, Italy, and still in its original frame, the Doni Tondo was probably commissioned by Agnolo Doni to commemorate his marriage to Maddalena Strozzi, the daughter of a powerful Tuscan family. Filippo Lippi's Bartolini Tondo (1452–1453) was one of the earliest examples of such paintings. In painting Botticelli created many examples, both Madonnas and narrative scenes, [4] and Michelangelo employed the circular tondo for several compositions, both painted and sculpted, including the Doni Tondo at the Uffizi, as did Raphael.

He executed the Doni tondo, his only panel painting documented in contemporary sources, and he also began two unfinished tondo sculptures, the Pitti and Taddei tondi, but after that he never returned to the tondo form in either medium.
