Stanley (also known as Port Stanley) is the capital city of the Falkland Islands. It is located on the island of East Falkland, on a north-facing slope in one of the wettest parts of the islands. At the 2016 census, the city had a population of 2,460. [1] The entire population of the Falkland Islands was 3,398 on Census Day - 9 October 2016.
Burdwood Bank was the location of several landslides some three million years ago. This in turn produced tsunami like events that hit the Falkland Islands on its southern coast. After the war, the Royal Air Force (RAF) remained in the Falkland Islands, and took over the airport, renaming it RAF Stanley. Immediately after the conflict, air defence of the islands and garrison was carried out by Royal Navy Sea Harrier FRS.1 and RAF Harrier GR.3 at RAF Stanley and from the aircraft carrier, HMS Invincible , on standing patrol.
