York Minster, formally the Cathedral and Metropolitical Church of Saint Peter in York, is an Anglican cathedral in the city of York, North Yorkshire, England.The minster is the seat of the archbishop of York, the second-highest office of the Church of England, and is the mother church for the diocese of York and the province of York. He was installed as the 8th dean of St James Cathedral during a service on 13 September 2015. [4] On 13 July 2022, he was announced as the next Dean of York, succeeding Jonathan Frost, thereby returning to England. [1] He was installed as the 77th dean during a service held on 12 November 2022 at York Minster. [5]
The church has daily Mass. The Traditional Latin Mass is celebrated at 8:15 am from Monday till Friday, 9:15 am on Saturday (Low Mass) and on Sunday at 12:00 pm (Sung Mass). The Novus Ordo Mass is celebrated in English at 12:10 pm daily, 5:00 pm on Saturday (Vigil Mass) and on Sunday at 8:30 am (Low) and 10:30 am (Sung). [12]
The original church edifice survived the Great Chicago Fire but was demolished to construct the present church. The famous Irish Roman Catholic ecclesiastical architect Patrick Charles Keely of Brooklyn, New York, New York, built the present church that is located on the southeast corner of Noble and Evergreen Streets from 1871 to 1881.
