Coleman is located north of the center of Coleman County at (31.827694, −99.425689 U.S. Routes 84 and 283 pass through the northeastern side of the city. US 84 leads northwest 52 miles (84 km) to Abilene and southeast 30 miles (48 km) to Brownwood, while US 283 leads north 41 miles (66 km) to Baird and south 52 miles (84 km) to Brady.

After leaving Brownwood, US 84 leaves US 67 and joins US 183. US 84 becomes a solo route again in Goldthwaite , traveling through Gatesville . In Gatesville, the hwy meets SH 36 , which coincidentally also runs to Abilene, albeit in a more direct way than US 84.
On July 13, 1934, the route was redirected further south along US 283 to Brownwood and then via Brady to Menard, replacing SH 129 from Rising Star to Brownwood, and part of SH 10 south of Brownwood. The section from Ballinger to Coleman was transferred to SH 10, while the section from Coleman to Rising Star was renumbered SH 206.
SH 206 was originally designated on July 23, 1934, replacing a section of SH 23 between Coleman and Rising Star.By 1939, the section between Cross Plains and Rising Star was transferred to SH 36. [2]
