Summit Terrace is a historic neighborhood within the Central Allison Hill section of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. It is bound by State Street, North Thirteenth Street, Bailey Street, North Twelfth Street, and Royal Terrace. Summit Terrace is also the only Architectural Conservation Overlay District (ACOD) in Harrisburg.
The town has more than two hundred residences, many of them second homes owned by permanent residents of Florida and Georgia. The town was organized in 1989 as "Santeetlah"; in 1999, it changed its name to "Lake Santeetlah". [5] The full-time population was 67 at the 2000 census and dropped to 45 in 2010. [6]
Lake Santeetlah has 76 miles (122 km) of shore line and is home to a variety of trout, muskie, crappie, and bass. Of special note is the adjoining Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest, which was set aside in 1936 as a memorial to poet-soldier Joyce Kilmer, and is an example of original, "old growth forest" in the eastern United States.
In the adjacent John N. Hall Club House (named after unrelated John Newton Hall, a late civic philanthropist from Camp Hill) [5] is one of the Harrisburg Boys & Girls Clubs of America locations. Also present is a community center with day-care and on-site family services and medical facilities. [2]
The Santeetlah Project, which began in 1925, was completed in 1928 by the Tallassee Power Company (now Tapoco). The Santeetlah Dam forms Lake Santeetlah, a reservoir which covers approximately 2,881 acres (1,166 ha), normal full pool area, with a drainage area of 176 square miles (460 km 2) and stretches to Robbinsville, North Carolina.
Since then, new homeowners have made improvements, causing property values to increase dramatically through the beginning of the 21st century.
