Ikeja is the capital city of Lagos State in southwestern Nigeria. [2] Its population, as of the 2006 census , is 313 196 . Prior to the emergence of military rule in the early 1980s, [ 3 ] Ikeja was a well planned, clean and quiet residential and commercial town with shopping malls, pharmacies and government reservation areas.
Established in 1977 [8] as Èkó Holiday Inn [9] and built on Victoria Island, it is the largest hotel in Nigeria. It was designed by architect Oluwole Olumuyiwa in collaboration with Americans. [1] It was subsequently renamed Le Meridien Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos. L'Hotel Eko Le Meridien is part of the Chagoury Group of companies. [10]
The hotel was acquired by the Nigerian government in 1964 and went through a series of managers in the following years, falling into disrepair and partially recovering. [2] In 1992, the government sold the hotel to the Ibru family (via Ikeja hotel Plc) for $50M, outbidding the Daewoo corporation of South Korea. [3]
