During the Xinhai Revolution in 1911, the Qing governor fled from Dihua (Ürümqi). A band of Yunnanese led by Yang Zengxin quelled the rebellion and established himself as the provincial leader. President Yuan Shikai recognized Yang as governor. Yang was one of the few who supported Yuan's attempt to become emperor.

In 1912, Yang Zengxin was appointed governor of Xinjiang by the newly established Republic of China. Yang converted Jian Hu into a public park, which was variously called Jianhu Park, West Lake Park, or West Park. It was later renamed Dihua Park and then Zhongshan Park, in honour of President Sun Yat-sen (Zhongshan). [2]

The Communist Party's liaison offices in cities under Nationalist control such as Chongqing, Guilin and Dihua (Ürümqi) were called Eighth Route Army Offices. Ethnic Koreans who fought in the Eighth Route Army later joined the Korean People's Army. In the Yan'an base area in September 1938, the Eighth Route Army established its first film group.
