Skretny was nominated by President George H. W. Bush on June 12, 1990, to a seat on the United States District Court for the Western District of New York vacated by Judge John Thomas Curtin. He was confirmed by the United States Senate on August 3, 1990, and received his commission on August 7, 1990. He served as Chief Judge from 2010 to 2015.

[5] He was confirmed by the United States Senate on October 30, 1997, and received his commission on November 5, 1997. He took senior status on December 15, 2012.
On November 28, 1967, Curtin was nominated by President Lyndon B. Johnson to a new seat on the United States District Court for the Western District of New York created by 80 Stat. 75. He was confirmed by the United States Senate on December 14, 1967, and received his commission the same day.
On May 14, 2012, President Barack Obama nominated Geraci to be a United States district judge for the United States District Court for the Western District of New York, to the seat vacated by Judge David G. Larimer, who assumed senior status in 2009. [2] His nomination was approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee on July 19, 2012. [5]
