Corning is a city in Steuben County, New York, United States, on the Chemung River. The population was 10,551 at the 2020 census . It is named for Erastus Corning , an Albany financier and railroad executive who was an investor in the company that developed the community.
The Town of Corning began as the "Town of Painted Post" in 1796 when the county was founded. In 1836, the name was changed to honor an important investor in the local economy. The community of Corning incorporated as a village in 1848, and separated itself from the town entirely after its incorporation as a city in 1890.

Other notable buildings include the Steuben County Courthouse designed by J. Foster Warner, the "Voting Booth" (c. 1893-1898), Corning Free Academy (1922), the First United Methodist Church of Corning and Christ Episcopal Church.
