Alpena County Courthouse in Alpena. Alpena (/ æ l ˈ p iː n ə / al-PEE-nə) is the only city and the county seat of Alpena County, Michigan, United States. According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 141.21 square miles (365.73 km 2), of which 104.45 square miles (270.52 km 2) is land and 36.76 square miles (95.21 km 2) (26.03%) is water, [5] consisting of near-shore waters of Lake Huron, various inland lakes, and a stretch of the Thunder Bay River.
As of the census [1] of 2000, there were 2,074 people, 768 households, and 602 families residing in the township. The population density was 26.1 inhabitants per square mile (10.1/km 2).
