The project's objective is to produce collaboratively a vast reference of quotations from prominent people, books, films, proverbs, etc. and writings about them. As of December 2024, Wikiquote content pages have been created in 97 editions, with 74 currently active and 23 closed.
Bartlett's Familiar Quotations attributed the exchange to Sandwich and John Wilkes, based upon a 1935 book. "Go West, young man" was indeed by Horace Greeley. As The Yale Book of Quotations describes in a detailed note, many reference works, including Bartlett's and The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations, wrongly attribute it to John Soule.

The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations is the Oxford University Press's large quotation dictionary. It lists short quotations that are common in English language and culture. The 8th edition, with 20,000 quotations over 1126 pages, was published in print and online versions in 2014. [1] The first edition was published in 1941.
The quotation must be useful and aid understanding of the subject; irrelevant quotations should be removed. All quotations must be attributed to their sources. Unlike fair-use images, quotations are permitted on talk pages and project pages where they are useful for discussion but the requirements listed above should still be observed.
