Matara District is located in the south west of Sri Lanka and has an area of 1,282.5 square kilometres (495.2 sq mi). Matara (Sinhala: මාතර, romanized: Māthara; Tamil: மாத்தறை) is a major city in Sri Lanka, on the southern coast of Southern Province. It is the second largest city in Southern Province. It is 160 km (99 mi) from Colombo. It is a major commercial hub, the administrative capital and largest city of Matara District.
During the Portuguese period there were two famous Sinhalese poets called Andare who was from Dickwella and Gajaman Nona who was from Denipitiya in Matara District, composing poems on common man. The Southern Province was seriously affected by the tsunami in 2004. The province is going through a rebuilding process.
