The two prior Unions were both formed in 1974. As its name suggests, most of its members are employed in the finance sector but in particular at the First Citizens Bank, the Republic Bank, the Central Bank of Trinidad and Tobago and credit unions. The Bank and General Workers Union (BGWU), formerly Bank Workers Trade Union (BWTU), a former trade union in Trinidad and Tobago, was formed on 17 April 1974 and represented workers in over 60 companies, including all the workers at the Central Bank of Trinidad and Tobago.
The association was registered on 2 May 1974 under the Trinidad and Tobago Trade Union Ordinance as Staff Association of Barclays Bank of Trinidad and Tobago Limited and won recognition on 21 April 1975. The name of the Union was changed when the bank's name changed to Republic Bank Limited in 1981.
