In this example, the scope attribute defines what the headers describe, column or row, which screen readers use. You can add a table using HTML rather than wiki markup, as described at HTML element#Tables. However, HTML tables are discouraged because wikitables are easier to customize and maintain, as described at manual of style on tables.
This is different from tables on webpages outside Wikipedia. Overall table widths (as opposed to max-widths) do not narrow on most pages outside Wikipedia. An FO table functions much like an HTML/CSS table. The user specifies rows of data for each individual cell. The user can, also, specify some styling information for each column, such as background color. Additionally, the user can specify the first row as a table header row, with its own separate styling information.
The easiest way to insert a new table is to use the editing toolbar that appears when you edit a page (see image above). Clicking the button will open a dialog where you define what you want in your new table. Once you've chosen the number of rows and columns, the wiki markup text for the table is inserted into the article.
Page layouts (using multiple columns, positioning elements, adding borders, etc.) should be done via CSS, not tables, whenever possible. Images and other embedded media should be positioned using standard image syntax. There are several templates available that will create preformatted multi-column layouts: see Help:Columns.
Note: This example is not accessible, and should be avoided as much as possible. For example, nested tables (tables inside tables) should be separated into distinct tables when possible. Here is a more advanced example, showing some more options available for making up tables.
