Main building of Pune University. Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU), formerly the University of Pune, is a public state university located in the city of Pune, India. It was established in 1949, and is spread over a 411 acres (1.66 km 2) campus in the neighbourhood of Ganeshkhind. [5] The university houses 46 academic departments.
The UGC publishes and regularly updates the lists of state universities. [3] As of 16 November 2022, the UGC lists 459 active state universities. [4] [note 1] The oldest establishment date listed by the UGC is 1857, shared by the University of Calcutta, the University of Madras and the University of Mumbai.
As of 14 November 2023, the UGC lists 124 institutes which were granted the deemed to be university status. [8] According to this list, the first institute to be granted deemed university status was Indian Institute of Science, which was granted this status on 12 May 1958. In many cases, the same listing by the UGC covers several institutes.
SIMS Pune is UGC approved and has been accredited in Grade 'A' by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). [4] Established in 1993, the institute is an example of PPP (Public Private Partnership) between Symbiosis University and Government of India – Ministry of Defence since 2002. [5]
