At a 2nd hand store today, I saw a Home Comfort Wood Cook Stove. They did not know the year and I could not find a model number on it. At first they said it was worth "over $2,000" but the price tag said $700. Later the woman said they "might" take $500 for the stove. Does anyone know how much a Home Comfort Wood Cook Stove is worth?
It was not a Home Comfort. It is a W J Loth stove manufactured in Waynesboro, Va which is close by. I bought it at an auction and it will need disassembled, cleaned up and put back together. One of the Roundels is cracked and the storage area above the stove where it mounts to the stove top is broken but I think I can get that fixed.
Stoves like that have air controls at the front. Air intake is reduced after the wood is burning good. Don't use a huge load of wood, just enough to do a proper job of cooking. Back in the 1980's we bought a wood cook stove second hand. It came from a very old lady's kitchen where an addition to the kitchen was added after the stove was in place. The stove was too big to make the turn needed with the added porch.
The wood stove I used for nearly 30 years had a small firebox and wasn't air tight. My very first experience with it I was trying to heat the kitchen while I slept on the floor. The firebox went from roaring hot to stone cold in about an hour. So, I was building a fire, from scratch, every hour and a half. It got down to minus 30 that night.
I just bought another wood burning cookstoves this weekend. While cleaning it, I see there is what looks to be some leftover insulation inside under the cast plates along the back and sides. I'm asking if anyone knows if this is asbestos, and how would I tell.
