Garrett is the first member of his family to pursue a career in racing. He started racing in street stock cars on dirt tracks in the early 1990's. He then drove trucks in the American Race Truck Series in his home state of Texas. He stopped racing in 2005 or 2006 due to lack of sponsorship and to spend more time with his children.
