Cardinal Ritter Prep opened on September 6, 1979. It is named for Cardinal Joseph Ritter, Archbishop of St. Louis in the mid-20th century. From 1977–1978, a community representative task force was established by the Board of Catholic Education of the St. Louis Archdiocese to study the future existence of a Catholic school in the old Labouré location in North St. Louis.
The school offers two tracks for high school students: college prep and early college, in coordination with University of South Carolina Salkehatchie. The school has accreditation from the South Carolina Independent School Association.
Athletic teams are open to any eligible STLCC student, regardless of which campus the student attends. The teams are known as the Archers (named for, and the athletic teams' logo incorporates, the Gateway Arch) and participate in the Missouri Community College Athletic Conference (MCCAC). The Florissant Valley Campus hosts Men's Soccer.
