A backyard railroad is a privately owned, outdoor railroad, most often in miniature, but large enough for one or several persons to ride on. The rail gauge can be anything from 2 + 1 ⁄ 2 in (64 mm) to 7 + 1 ⁄ 2 in (190.5 mm) or more. Smaller backyard or outdoor railroads that cannot be ridden are called garden railroads.

The ride begins with the train leaving the station passing under a walkway, going down a small hill and turning left into the enclosed transfer track area. From there it turns right and climbs the first lift. After clearing the lift hill, the train turns right and descends into a trench while completing a U-turn.
In the 2004 Guinness World Records, Train Mountain is recognized as the “Longest Miniature Hobby Railroad”. [4] At the time Train Mountain was recognized by Guinness, it was reported to have 69,900 feet (13.24 mi; 21.3 km) of 7 + 1 ⁄ 2 in (190.5 mm) gauge mainline track and 133,250 feet (25.237 mi; 40.61 km) of total track including yards, sidings, spurs, and connector tracks.
Georgia Southwestern ended operations on the line from Preston to Mahrt in 1999, and the state of Georgia sought a new operator for the entire route from Vidalia to Mahrt, part of which was still retained by the Georgia Southwestern. The Heart of Georgia railroad was created in 1999 for the purpose of operating the line on behalf of the state. [8]
