Florida became the 27th U.S. state in 1845, and its last county was created in 1925 with the formation of Gilchrist County from a segment of Alachua County. The high school is named after John I. Leonard, who served as the first president of Palm Beach State College (then Palm Beach Junior College) and as Palm Beach County superintendent of public schools from 1936 to 1947.
