Tahquitz Canyon (/ t ɑː ˈ k w iː t s /, sometimes / ˈ t ɑː k ɪ t s /) is located in Palm Springs, California on a section of the Agua Caliente Indian Reservation. The canyon descends from the Riverside County San Jacinto Mountains .
The Cactus to Clouds Trail involves an arduous climb of approximately 10,700 feet (3,300 m) from the desert floor in Palm Springs to the summit at 10,834 feet (3,302 m). [15] This trail has no water sources until 8,500 feet (2,600 m), so early starts are advised to avoid the temperatures which often soar above 100 °F (38 °C).
The trail starts at Fortynine Palms Parking Area, goes up and over a ridge dotted with barrel cacti, and descends to a palm oasis in a rocky canyon. The palm trees were planted by miners in the early 1900s to easily locate the natural spring located there. [3] The oasis is frequently used as a watering hole for bighorn sheep. [4]
