The term is sometimes used to distinguish between these items and retail of consumer goods sold in ironmongers' shops or hardware stores.
Barnard, Bishop & Barnards was a manufacturing and general ironmonger, initially an ironmongery started by Charles Barnard (1804-1871) on 9 November 1826 in premises near Norwich Market. By 1840 his retail business had expanded and included iron foundry workshops in Pottergate, and producing ironwork for domestic and agricultural purposes.
Halfords was founded by Frederick Rushbrooke, in Birmingham in 1892, as a wholesale ironmongery. [3] The company takes its name from Halford Street, named after the physician, Henry Halford , in Leicester , where Rushbrooke opened a store in 1902 and started selling cycling goods.

Entrance to Ironmongers' Hall. Ironmongers' Hall is the home of the Worshipful Company of Ironmongers. It is located in Aldersgate Street in the City of London.The first hall, dating back to 1457, was in Fenchurch Street; it was rebuilt in 1587 and rebuilt again in 1745 on the same site. [3]
