Dayton is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Lyon County, Nevada, United States. The population was 15,153 at the 2020 census . [ 3 ] Dayton is the second oldest Nevada settlement.
Walking Box Ranch, 7 mi (11 km) west of Searchlight, Nevada in the Mojave Desert, was founded in 1931 by the actors Rex Bell and Clara Bow as a working 400,000 acres (160,000 ha) ranch. [ 2 ] [ 3 ] The ranch covered 160 acres (65 ha) [ 4 ] at the time it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on January 30, 2009. [ 5 ]
After the Dayton Court House burned down in 1909, the seat was moved to Yerington in 1911. There were stories that it was named for Captain Robert Lyon, a survivor of the Pyramid Lake War in 1860, but Nevada State Archives staff discovered a county seal with the picture of the Civil War general, settling the conflict.
