The choir has been central to choral music in Ireland since its foundation by Colin Mawby in 1985, following the introduction of a new choral policy. This 140-strong choir is the country's premier symphonic choral ensemble and has performed more than 52 of the major choral works since its foundation, mostly in conjunction with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra and the National Symphony Orchestra.
Eight choirs from seven countries participated, with Finland being the only country who competed in both adult's and children/youth's categories. The winner was Copenhagen Girls' Choir from Denmark. The adult category was won by Hägersten A Cappella from Sweden and the inaugural Youth Jury prize was won by Incantanti from Switzerland.
About 5,000 choristers take part every year; they come from all over Ireland, from Britain, from the European continent, and sometimes from as far away as Africa, America, and Asia.
