Pharmacology is just the study of drugs, how they interact, what side effects they cause, indications, etc. Pharmacy as a career is the monitoring of drugs (and their pharmacology) as well as disease states being treated, monitoring drug outcomes, managing patient compliance and so forth.

Thanks in advance. Pharmacist = Pharm.D = Doctor of Pharmacy. Pharmacologist = Ph.D = Scientist. Pharmacology is a more difficult degree and usually requires more years of schooling. It's more of the intellectual basis behind medications and their effects. Pharmacy is more of a practical field.
5. Reaction score. 1. Apr 5, 2018. #5. Yea I'd be annoyed if these courses didn't count. Its basically applied chemistry + bio. I seriously have like 24 credits at an A in pharmacology and toxicology so without these classes my science GPA takes a nosedive. 1 user.
My freind had purchased Principles of Pharmacology- The Pathophysiologic Basis of Drug Therapy, and I purchased it because I was so impressed with this book. It's by people at Harvard, and it was written using Lilly's template (IMHO Lilly is the best book for second year students taking cardio since it is so well written).
Based on my pharm classes so far, it's basically memorize: drug name, mechanism of effect (enzyme inhibitor, receptor agonist, etc), characteristic side effects. Dec 28, 2011. #9. Getting a medicinal chemistry degree limits you while getting an organic degree gives you more options. You will also need to go to a top-tier school. Preferably a top-10. Get with a famous adviser and complete your degree in 5 years. After that, do at least a 2 year post-doc at a prestigious school (top 10).
103. May 5, 2013. #1. Long story short, I'm required to take the NBME Pharmacology Subject Exam in order to waive pharmacology for my MS-2 year. I've been trying to find out the style and difficulty of the questions found within the subject exam in order to gauge how much study time I will need to devote to reviewing pharmacology.
