Was a hoot in the Jeep. Many roads are getting paved as of late because the states are finding it is cheaper than trying to maintain them otherwise. I'm very interested as well and I'm looking to do the TAT next year. Roads are changing everyday and the trail has many pitfalls but it should be fun. GPS Kevins route:

I have been wanting to go on my motorcycle, but the all the rain we have gotten changed my mine. I put a rack and roof top tent on my gladiator. We went on the trail from Fayetteville Ar to Fayetteville Tn before I had to drop him off where he lived in Alabama and I headed back. We are going to pick up and continue the trail later on sometime.

Nearest Jeep dealers were a good five hours drive. Got the water pump installed and were able to continue rest of several day trip. Or that time driving the TransAmerica Trail when my buddy had a strange problem with braking. Turned out to be a missing bolt from the left front brake caliper.

The "trail" isn't really a trail - it's a route made up of existing roads & trails. As those roads close, get paved, the gates get locked, etc., the route changes. The price you pay for the maps helps cover the cost of updating the maps - which typically means putting feet on the ground. Sam is (was?) continually working on updates.

A stock jk could probably make the entire trail if you're just sticking to the trail itself. A good set off all terrain tires would be all you need. Depending on your load, either a lift or some better coils would be a good idea. The reason I'm over-building my jeep is for the off road trails I'll be doning along the way (moab. Rubicon, etc.)

A couple of buddies and I just did the Arkansas segment of the TAT. As was the NM and CO portions, this one was a blast. I particularly enjoyed the "Warloop Road" part -- despite being a county road, it's freaking AWESOME. It is basically a trail through the woods that contains a large area that has a downhill rock area. It was a blast!

A 4Runner friend and I ('21 JTR) just completed the NM and CO portions of the TAT. It was a blast. From start to finish -- my home in NETX and back -- was a total of 2,800 miles. I pulled my '22 TAXA WoolyBear Overland on the trip and it performed like a champ. I must say that Engineer Pass and...
