Word simply won't open at all, gets hung up/frozen trying to open the document, and I have to use CTRL-ALT-DELETE to shut Word down. I've been using Word 2013 for many years and I've never had any problem opening Word 97 to 2003 documents with it. I have exactly the same setup of Win 7 Pro 64bit, and Office 2010. I also happened to be doing a disc image reinstall, so decided to try installing my old Word 97 disc, (not Office 97). You should certainly be able to open .doc files from within Word. If you're trying to open them by double-clicking in Windows Explorer, then there is a problem with the file association. You can try reregistering Word to recreate the file associations: With Word closed, press Windows Key+R to open the Run dialog.
