Step 5: Disguise Self as the captain. Why? I dunno, working my way up the Disguise Self chain. 2 first level spell slots used. I drag the captain into a closet after taking his weapons. I'm not proficient in them, but hey it helps with the illusion rather than creating illusionary weapons.
He acts as the "face" of the group (highest Deception, Intimidation, Persuasion, Performance and Insight) and has planted the possibility of using Disguise Self to be any generic NPC, then go inside a store, use Friends to convince the owner to lower the prices and leave before Friends ends.
Perform a crime where there will be witnesses and drop the disguise self spell. You've now incriminated someone else in the crime. If you have a known enemy you can disguise self as yourself and say they were trying to incriminate you instead when in actuality it is the other way around. Have a good alibi and let Ace Attorney shenanigans commence.
Active blur and active mirror images are two different things. One is a blur, which is part of a singular entity (the wizard). Mirror image makes three illusion copies of the wizard. The spell is “Disguise Self”, not “Disguise Self And Also Three Other Illusions”. :P
Seems to me that Alter Self looks to be the better spell overall since it doesn't pose an investigation check like Disguise Self does. Plus it allows you to change your voice and has more versatility in that you can form magical unarmed strike weapons if you don't already have a magical weapon and adapt your body to go under water.
Disguise Self states " You can't change your body type, so you must adopt a form that has the same basic arrangement of limbs." So would Disguise Self reasonably hide horns and a tail or is that outside of the parameters of the spell? ie Would a tiefling be able to cast Disguise Self but need to physically hide their tail under a cape, or ...
So the barlgura demon can innately cast a few spells, including Disguise Self. Seems pretty nifty at first, but then you realize that it can only make you 'seem 1 foot taller or shorter', as well as having 'the same basic arrangement of limbs'.
For my own take, I can find strong synergy with Changelings and Disguise Self (especially if from Mask of Many Faces), where the Changeling changes the body, and Disguise self disguises the outfit. But that seems to leave little room left for Disguise Kit. Maybe a more physical improvement on Disguise Self with time investment?
I'm thinking to infiltrate a Cambion into my players party, as part of a long-game plan by a greater devil, but alter self and disguise self only last for an hour, and require concentration. Is there something I can provide this guy to have him be properly disguised? A ring or somesuch would be nice, but an alternative spell would also be good.
Disguise Self is an illusion, which means it holds to the scrutiny of the observers understanding of what people look like and how they can be interacted with. So, from a distance they'd look similar, and the speed at which you can apply a spell means you can do this without too much pre-planning.
