Manhattan is the principal city of the Manhattan metropolitan area which, as of 2014, had an estimated population of 98,091. Wildcat Creek Watershed is located in Riley County, Kansas and covers 99.5 square miles (258 km 2) The targeted area of this application is 8 square miles (21 km 2) within the city limits of Manhattan, Kansas, with an urban population density of 7,000 to 8,000 persons per square mile.
As of the census [5] of 2000, there were 108,999 people, 39,366 households, and 24,774 families residing within the MSA. The racial makeup of the MSA was 81.42% White, 9.73% African American, 0.65% Native American, 2.72% Asian, 0.20% Pacific Islander, 2.24% from other races, and 3.04% from two or more races.
The community has a rural, volunteer fire department, updated in 2002 with a new building. Zeandale almost grew by a factor of four in 2005, when a Manhattan developer cited land for sale surrounding Zeandale as prime real-estate for the growing Manhattan market.
The Kansas City Fire Department first originated with the formation of volunteer bucket brigades as early as 1858. Church bells rung to signal a fire alarm and members would assemble at the scene to help. In 1867, the city abandoned the voluntary bucket brigade for a paid fire department, and Colonel Frank Foster was elected as its first chief. [4]
