The lake freighter SS Henry Steinbrenner was a 427-foot (130 m) long, 50-foot (15 m) wide, and 28-foot (8.5 m) deep, [1] dry bulk freighter of typical construction style for the early 1900s, primarily designed for the iron ore, coal, and grain trades on the Great Lakes.
Lake freighters, or lakers, are bulk carriers operating on the Great Lakes of North America. These vessels are traditionally called boats , although classified as ships . [ 1 ] [ 2 ] Freighters typically have a long, narrow hull, a raised pilothouse , and the engine located at the rear of the ship.
Erie was a steamship that operated as a passenger freighter on the Great Lakes. It caught fire and sank on August 9, 1841, resulting in the loss of an estimated 254 lives, making it one of the deadliest disasters in the history of the Great Lakes. The Erie had a wooden hull and used a side-wheel paddle for propulsion.
Early in the 20th century, a new design was becoming prevalent on Great Lakes ore/ bulk cargo freighters. [1] Instead of locating the pilothouse and deckhouses in the center of the ship, the new design placed deck houses at the extreme front and back of the boat. The name "straight deck" referred to the large flat cargo hold expanse in between.

It's noted that the Walters was the freighter built to replace the SS William C. Moreland, which ran aground on Sawtooth Reef, Lake Superior. The Pilot house of the Irvan L. Clymer is located on Pier B in Duluth, Minnesota. Built in 1917 and scrapped in 1994 the Irvan L. Clymer ' s pilot house sits at the end of the pier.
