Gerard Sekoto OIG [1] (9 December 1913 – 20 March 1993), was a South African artist and musician. He is recognised as a pioneer of urban black art and social realism . His work was exhibited in Paris , Stockholm , Venice , Washington , and Senegal , as well as in South Africa.

During the 18th century, the Ndzundza Ndebele people of South Africa created their tradition and style of house painting. Until the late 1900s, the Ndebele noted warriors and large landowners. In the autumn of 1883, they went to war with the neighboring Boers. The loss of the war brought on a harsh life and horrible punishments for the Ndebele.

Gregoire Johannes Boonzaier OMSS (31 July 1909 – 22 April 2005) was a South African artist well known for his landscapes, portraits and still life paintings.He was a famous exponent of Cape Impressionism, a founder of the New Group, and a contributor, through his art works, to the struggle against apartheid.
