The first documented Europeans to visit the islands arrived with Christopher Columbus. Blown off course during his 1493–1496 voyage, Columbus encountered Saint Croix on November 14, 1493. A boat was sent ashore to the island, the crew of which was met by the native Amerindians. Their encounter quickly erupted into violence.
