The gypsothèque (plaster cast gallery) of the Louvre is a collection of plaster casts that was formed in 1970 by the reunion of the corresponding inventories of the Louvre, the Beaux-Arts de Paris and the Art and Archaeology Institute of the Sorbonne University, the latter two following depredations during the May 68 student unrest.
The collection contains roughly 5,500 paintings by 1,400 artists born before 1900, and over 500 named artists are French by birth. For painters with more than two works in the collection, or for paintings by unnamed and unknown artists, see the Louvre website.

The Louvre's set were in the collection of the Dukes of Guise by 1589, remaining until 1654. After being owned by Cardinal Mazarin , they entered the French royal collection of Louis XIV in 1665. They are now in the Louvre museum , and considered one of the masterpieces of the art of tapestry .
