Baden-Württemberg (/ ˌ b ɑː d ən ˈ v ɜːr t ə m b ɜːr ɡ / BAH-dən VURT-əm-burg; [6] German: [ˌbaːdn̩ ˈvʏʁtəmbɛʁk] ⓘ), commonly shortened to BW or BaWü, is a German state (Land) in Southwest Germany, east of the Rhine, which forms the southern part of Germany's western border with France.
Württemberg-Baden consisted of the northern halves of the former states of Württemberg and Baden. The southern border of this part of the US-administered zone was set so that the autobahn connecting Karlsruhe and Munich (today the A8) was completely contained within the American zone.
Biberach is the capital of the district. Kirchberg is located in Swabia near the small river Iller, which forms part the border between Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria. Kirchberg was first mentioned in 806 in the Codex of the St. Gallen Closters. There are two even smaller villages called Sinningen and Nordhofen which belong to Kirchberg.

Part of the state of Baden-Württemberg, it centers on the city of Freiburg im Breisgau. The district of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald, which partly consists of the Breisgau, is named after the Black Forest area. Parts of the Breisgau are also situated in the political districts of Freiburg im Breisgau and Emmendingen.
The name Baden-Württemberg was only intended as a temporary name, but ended up the official name of the state because no other name could be agreed upon.
