The Beartooth Highway is the section of U.S. Route 212 between Red Lodge and Cooke City, Montana.It traces a series of steep zigzags and switchbacks, along the Montana–Wyoming border (45th parallel) to the 10,947-foot-high (3,337 m) Beartooth Pass in Wyoming.
In his book Dateline America published in 1979, the late CBS correspondent Charles Kuralt referred to the highway as "the most beautiful drive in America". [1] US 212 looking west from Vista Point towards the Beartooth Mountains. Along this series of switchbacks, US 212 climbs over 3,000 feet (910 m) to Beartooth Pass.
U.S. Route 212, the Beartooth Highway, passes through the center of Cooke City, leading southwest into Yellowstone National Park, and east over 8,040-foot (2,450 m) Colter Pass in the eastern part of the CDP to continue southeast back into Wyoming in the valley of the Clarks Fork Yellowstone River and thence into the Beartooth Mountains.

Beartooth National Forest was established in Montana on July 1, 1908 by the U.S. Forest Service with 685,293 acres (2,773.28 km 2) from part of Yellowstone National Forest and all of Pryor Mountains National Forest.

Since 2014, the Custer and Gallatin National Forests are managed together as the Custer-Gallatin National Forest with headquarters in Bozeman, Montana. [3] There are local ranger district offices located in Ashland and Red Lodge in Montana, and in Camp Crook in South Dakota for Custer, and West Yellowstone, Livingston, Gardiner, and Bozeman in Montana for Gallatin.
