Quino - This is my first BMW, rather happy with until this. When I had it at the dealer to check into this racket they informed me of the situation. Transfer case and front drive shaft replace = $4400.00. Even the tech that worked on it could not believe the cost. I found a used one through the net with 20,000 miles and swapped it out myself.

Thanks for the replies. Since I posted the original questions I have spent a lot of time researching for a good BMW specific OBD2 scanner. As many of you mention, Carly is one of the top choices. One thing that people need to keep in mind is that you need the Carly adapter plus the Carly Pro app which costs about $60.

Now, a less pressing matter: Dashboard says there's a right two stage brake light malfunction (also the left two stage brake light, but that one comes and goes). I've had the issue for about a year and a half. Dealer was saying the entire assembly needs to be replaced, but the brake lights light up when the brake is depressed.

And yes, replacing the auxiliary battery sucks in that version of the car. For reference, if the main battery in the trunk is a 105Ah - It is BMW part number- 61 21 5 A40 E33 (105Ah AGM H9 size battery). $245 + Tax = $263 for the battery + $18 refundable core charge from my local BMW dealer / service center.
