During the Vietnam War, the building was used by the city of Saigon government under South Vietnam and was renamed Tòa đô chánh Sài Gòn or Tòa đô sảnh ('Saigon mayor's hall'). Since the communists’ conquest of Saigon in 1975, the building has housed the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee and Ho Chi Minh City People's Council.
