These sheep are generally small and have characteristic short "fluke-shaped" tails, broad at the base and tapering to a hair-covered tip. Their tails typically have 13 vertebrae compared with over 20 for other sheep; in most types the individual tail vertebrae are also shorter than those of long-tailed sheep. Their faces and legs are free of wool.
Ouessant sheep form a rare breed, originating here. These are northern European short-tailed sheep , ubiquitous in northern Europe up to Roman times , but which now survives only in a few places. Apart from Ushant, these are in remote islands and mountains of Britain and Scandinavia and some places around the Baltic Sea .
These sheep are listed on the Rare Breed Survival Trust. Efforts are being made to conserve and promote the breed due to its historical significance and unique genetic traits.

It was initially established to facilitate communication between progressive breeders and improve sheep breeding management as well as provide a unified voice for the sheep industry.
