Loeser's Deli was a Jewish deli in the Bronx, New York that closed in 2019, after 60 years, citing a non-compliant gas line. [1] [2] Founded in 1960 by Freddy Loeser and Ernest his father, a Holocaust survivor, their origin story is that they used Freddy's Bar Mitzvah money to open the business.
The restaurant appears during the opening scenes of the 1993 film A Bronx Tale. It can be seen in back projected stock footage of Gotham City in the 1966 television version of Batman. In season 1, episode 6 of The Odd Couple television series, "Oscar's Ulcer" (originally aired October 29, 1970), Oscar Madison is seen going into the restaurant.
In 1933, [2] 45 E. 18th St., the German-American Lohdens, [2] bought the bar, changing the name to the Old Town Bar, and the neon sign was erected, in 1937. [1] After the end of Prohibition and the closing of the nearby 18th Street Subway station on 8 November 1948, the bar began to fall into disrepair.
