Philadelphia (/ f ɪ l ə ˈ d ɛ l f i. ə / ⓘ), colloquially referred to as Philly, is the most populous city in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania [11] and the sixth-most populous city in the United States, with a population of 1,603,797 in the 2020 census.
Today, it is a neighborhood in the South Philadelphia section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Because of its location south of the early Philadelphia, the name was adopted in allusion to the borough of Southwark in the county of London, England, just south of the city of London. [3]
Centre Square is now the site of Philadelphia City Hall. Philadelphia built the first citywide water system in the United States. Steam pumps drew drinking water from the Schuylkill River, a mile away, and pumped it into tanks in the dome of the Water Works. Gravity then distributed it through wooden water mains. Plate 29
