The community is located about 4 miles north of Middletown, [3] in southwestern Lake County, 24 miles (39 km) from Calistoga. It lays at 1,525 feet (465 m) above sea level. The road began as a trail built in 1852 after flooding made the main Napa Valley road impassable. Later, it served as a wagon trail to link cinnabar mines on Mount St. Helena to San Pablo Bay, the northern portion of the San Francisco Bay, [1] and was the first permanent road from Napa to Calistoga.
Originally constructed in the early 1920s, it is one of the steepest and most difficult to drive of any California state highway. Until recently it was called the "crookedest road in California".
