The BMW M6 is a high-performance version of the 6 Series marketed under the BMW M sub-brand from 1983 to 2019 (with a break from 1990 to 2004).. Introduced in the coupe body style, the M6 was also built in convertible and fastback sedan ('Gran Coupe') body styles for later generations.
The M635CSi model, introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1983, is the first in the line of M6 models. The M6 model was introduced in 2005 in coupé and convertible body styles. It is powered by the S85 V10 engine shared with the E60 M5, and most M6s were produced with a 7-speed automated manual transmission ("SMG III"). [4] In March 2011, the BMW 6 Series (F06/F12/F13) began production as the successor to the E63.
The BMW F06/F12/F13 is the third generation 6 Series and was sold from 2011 to 2018. The body styles of the range are a 4-door sedan (F06 model code, marketed as "Gran Coupé"), 2-door convertible (F12 model code) and 2-door coupé (F13 model code). It was introduced at the 2011 Shanghai Auto Show and New York Auto Show.
The new 6 Series was first shown as the "BMW Concept 6 Series" coupé concept car at the 2010 Paris Motor Show. [7] [8] The exterior was designed by Nader Faghihzadeh, [9] [10] and the interior by Christian Bauer. [11] Unusually for BMW, the production version of the convertible was released before the coupé.
The model range consisted of standard length and long wheelbase ("Li" models) sedans. The F01 was the first BMW to be available with a hybrid drivetrain ("ActiveHybrid 7"), 8-speed automatic transmission, and a turbocharged V12 engine. It was also the first 7 Series to be available with a turbocharged petrol engine and all-wheel drive (xDrive).
The ActiveHybrid X6 went on sale in December 2009 in the US market with a base price of US$89,765 (~$123,934 in 2023). [18] The drive system featured in the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 consists of a 300 kW (402 hp) V8 power unit with BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology and two electric engines developing 67 kW (90 hp) and, respectively, 63 kW (84 hp).
