[2] The creek begins southeast of Red Mountain, at an elevation of 778 feet (237 m). It makes an S-curve west-northwest then bends sharply south, dropping into the valley of the South Fork Eel.
The Cedar Creek mainstem begins at 1,730 ft (530 m) on the eastern flank of Burra Burra Peak, [1] located about 0.4 mi (1 km) south of the Dowdy Ranch Visitor's Center of Henry Coe State Park. It flows south for 2.0 mi (3 km) where it is joined on the right by its 5.5 mi (9 km) long Cañada de la Dormida tributary.
